Disk problems

Despite extremely low odds considering the type of hardware used, we lost 2 disks on a filer in under 3 minutes yesterday. While we do our best to warn you of any anticipated problems, we again stress the importance (and your contractual obligation) of maintaining an up-to-date backup of your server at an external location in the unlikely event that just such an incident might arise.

At 7:50 PM (GMT) we lost a third disk and all of its data :( Our teams spent the night trying to recover the RAID 6 volume of filer 13, though this was eventually deemed not possible.

To be totally transparent, we are not going to hide behind the fact that we are still in the Beta testing phase, or that our hosting contract requires you to maintain a backup of your data on an external machine; The loss of your data is totally unacceptable. Even if what happened had nearly no change of occurring, it did, and those of you that were affected by this will be given a full refund.

Hardware incident

Following the loss of 2 disks on a filer, we launched the restoration of the Raid 'volume group' on filer 13. The process did not go well. Our technical teams therefore paused the affected servers in order to resolve the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. We will keep you informed of the status of the maintenance.

GandiMail Problems

The GandiMail architecture currently functions via fluctuations between the recovery of messages in your mailbox via POP/IMAP or Gandi webmail. Our administrators are in the process of stabilizing the service as rapidly as possible. The final phase of the stabilization that we have previously mentioned on the subject should be brought online in the coming days and will eliminate the problems that we are currently experiencing.

17:00 GMT The maintenance scheduled for next week is being done right now in order to facilitate an early and permanent fix of the problem on our GandiMail service. We estimate this maintenance to be completed within two hours. We are aware of the inconvenience caused by this issue, we apologize once again.
19:15 GMT: The maintenance is taking a bit longer than planned. Everything is going along nicely, and the service will soon return to normal.

Blog widgets (updated)

We had to suspend some blog widgets in order to recover from high latencies you might have encountered on your Gandiblog this week-end.

We are working on the problem and expect a resolution on monday.

Updated Mon May 5 17:17:43 CEST: service is back online since a few hours and should be stable.

Network problems

Due to network difficulties, Gandi's services are temporarily unavailable for some of you. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We are currently working on resolving the problem as quickly as possible.

UPDATE 17.30 GMT: The incident has now been resolved. We have fixed the equipment responsible for the network access problems.

Here is a clear and open explanation of the event:

"General" version:

Due to a configuration error on our part (human error), we started a chain reaction with a serious routing bug on our network equipment. This led to the system being ground to a halt, which is why our services were unavailable for one quarter of the service providers.

"Expert version":

The involuntary passage of Cisco's switching software led to half of the CEF routes being rendered unavailable, despite an immediate return to the original configuration.

We offer our most sincere apologies for this incident, which does not resemble us at all. Of course, we will grant a refund of one hosting day for customers that feel wronged (which is the reason this will be granted upon request by the way), and will take all the necessary actions to assure that this incident will just remain a bad memory.

Hosting incident

Some servers are unreachable because of a hardware problem.
Our technical staff is going to fix this as soon as possible.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

-- Edit: everything should be up and running now.

.DE and .AT transfers now possible

We have just activated the possibility of transferring .DE and .AT domain names. As a reminder, for .DE domain names we do not yet provide a contact person in Germany for the administrative contact. In order for the transfer to be accepted, the owner contact and/or administrative contact must have a German street address.

Special rebate: .AT domain names for $17

Because of a slightly strange calculation on the cost of .AT domain names at the registry (from 1 to 6 times its price), we are offering the next 80 .AT domain names for $17 excl. VAT instead of $25 excl. VAT.

The .AT TLD is open to all without any restriction.

Disk problems (updated)

Servers created since Sunday are experiencing disk access problems.

Same thing for recently created disks. We've identified the major cause and are currently working towards restoring the service.

Updated 10 Apr 2008, 12am : We're still wrestling with the controller cards of our (future ex) storage system. To minimize the time it takes to resolve this, we have to 'Pause' the servers that are potentially affected by this problem (servers created since Sunday). This pause will last 10-15mn maximum.

Updated 10 Apr 2008, 1.20pm : Operation complete, there shouldn't be any problem now. Sorry to those affected by this since Sunday.

.AT and .DE launch

We continue to march on in our project to propose all of the European TLDs: we're adding the official German (DE) and Austrian (AT) TLDs today. The .DE is the most used national TLD in the world, and the .AT comes twenty first in such a ranking.

The .DE TLD is only open to German citizens and companies, or to people that can justify an administrative contact in Germany. Please note that the DNS need to be properly installed (Zonecheck verification) for the domain to be active.

Details about the .DE TLD are available at this address:
http://www.gandi.net/domaine/de/info
The .DE is available for $15 excl. VAT at an A rate. The complete grid is available at this address:
http://www.gandi.net/domain/price/detail/de/

The .AT TLD, on the other hand, is open to all. Its details are available at this address:
http://www.gandi.net/domain/at/info
The .AT is available for $25 excl. VAT at an A rate. The complete grid is available at this address:
http://www.gandi.net/domain/price/detail/at/

Transfer procedures for these 2 TLDs aren't active yet. They will be in the next couple of days.

Network modifications

We will be making changes on our network between midnight and 1am, in order to upgrade our connection to 2gbps. This interruption will cut/slow down/disturb access to Gandi sites and services for only some of you (23% of you, to be precise).

This modification is part of the tests begun last week to increase the bandwidth per hosting share.

We apologize for the disturbance.

Hosting incident

Following an ongoing incident on two machines, we have forced the rebooting of certain servers. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Note (19:15 GMT): Many of these servers did not restart correctly, we are in the process of verifying them one by one.

Commenting is now possible!

Many Gandi resellers have been requesting the possibility of adding notes to their customer's domains, and this is now possible!
You can now add a note to:
  • domains in your portfolio
  • one of your contacts
  • one of your servers
Note that the notes that you add are strictly confidential and can only be seen by the reseller.

.ASIA Launch

The .ASIA TLD will be launched today at 1pm, French time. Gandi, who did not participate in the Sunrise phases for reasons explained in this post, has been .ASIA-accredited since the end of last year.

The .ASIA for all!
The TLD is normally reserved for individuals and corporate bodies who can justify a contact in the Asia geographic zone (from Turkey to the Pacific). This contact (CED) can be one of the 4 contacts linked to your domain (Owner, Admin, Billing or Technical), and you will then need to provide identification information for this person (passport number) or body (company number). Important point: if you cannot justify a CED contact yourself, Gandi, who possesses an Australian subsidiary, will be able to assume a technical contact position with the Registry for no extra charge.

Now accepting orders
As always, we do not like pre-booking systems by which companies promise that you will definitely get the domain you want by paying more money, and therefore we did not participate in the auctioning system or in any anticipated booking.
You can start placing your orders right away, bearing in mind you will need to manually check whether the domain was reserved during the Sunrise period. If your order fails, we will of course reimburse you fully.

The TLDs specificities are available here:
http://www.gandi.net/domaine/asia/info

The TLD is sold for $25.00 excl VAT as an A rate. The full grid is available here:
http://www.gandi.net/domaine/prix/detail/asia/

You can discuss this with us at the Gandi Bar.

Lower rates for .MOBI domains

The registry that manages .MOBI domains has decided to lower the creation price on the TLD. Gandi is therefore acting on this and dropping the price from $24 to $18 for A rates.

The complete price rates for .MOBI is available at the following address: http://www.gandi.net/domaine/prix/detail/mobi/?lang=en

Website maintenance

We are performing maintenance on Gandi's website in order to definitively fix the database problem that has been making all of our lives difficult since yesterday. This disruption should not be long.

Please accept our apologies for this temporary inconvenience, and know that we are doing everything possible to assure that you can resume your operations as soon as possible.

Gandi Database Incident

Hello,

Since yesterday, we have had problems with our database. Indeed, several tables crashed randomly, and for no apparent reason. The incidents only lasted several minutes each time because our technical team quickly reacted and corrected the situation.

We are of course in the process of searching for the cause of this problem, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. If you are impacted by this situation, please try your operation a few minutes later.

Time lags on Gandi Mail yesterday, explanations

We wish to express our sincerest apologies for the quality of our Gandi Mail service yesterday, Monday 3 March 2008. Some of you unfortunately received mail with more than 3 hours' delay, which is simply unacceptable.

The problem is mainly due to an abnormally significant load on our mail servers. On 'normal' days, we already manage more than 10 million e-mails (80% or 90% being spam). Delivering top-quality service is an every day struggle which should be made transparent to you. Yesterday was clearly a failure. We could have silenced it and looked the other way, but that doesn't correspond to our aims and to who we are. As always, we prefer to be totally transparent, to confirm that the problem has been identified and that we are working on it fully.

Our platform will therefore be modified in upcoming weeks to give you more comfort in your mail management. Until then - and starting from now - we are going to add machines and change some settings so as to ensure less delays when we experience spamming of several hundreds of thousands of e-mails.

Finally, just a word of advice for those of you who are still on the old mail platform and the old DNS (full1.gandi.net or ns7.gandi.net): I strongly recommend that you migrate to the new DNS and to Gandi Mail, which globally works better. To do so, all you need to do is click the 'Manage' link in the mail section of your domain management interface and follow the procedure.

As explained, maintaining an excellent quality of products and services is a priority, and this is adequately reflected in our timetable.

You can discuss this with us at the Gandi Bar.

Server maintenance

Hello, tonight (02/28 to 02/29), our technical team is going to change some hardware on one of our servers. This maintenance is scheduled from 2 AM to 3 AM tonight, Paris time. The following services will be impacted :

  • Reseller's API-XML
  • Gandi Mail Operations
  • Gandi Hosting Operations

This does not mean that emails will not go through or that servers will be unavailable, but only that certain operations (reboot, disk creation, adding a share, etc...), will need to wait the end of the maintenance to be validated.
