Recently Gandi expanded its domain name offering by boosting the number of extensions we provide. This doesn't just help us reach more customers internationally , but allows existing customers to centralise their domain name portfolio in one place, particularly those that have some of these less common extensions.

The idea is to expand our offering so that all of our customers (current and future) can opt to transfer all of their domains to us if they are satisfied with our way of managing them.

This is why today, Gandi is offering you lower transfer prices for a large number of extensions (though the exact discount depends on the registry, see below):

.COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, .NAME, and .US domains at €5.50 ($7.50 or £5.00) excl. VAT, with a year added to the expiration date,

.FR, .RE, .BE, and .EU at 5.50€ ($7.50 or £5.00) excl. VAT with the year added to the transfer date (e.g. the new expiry date is set to be 1 year from the transfer date)

.CH and .LI domain transfers are free (this is already the case, but not many people may know it

Contrary to what the majority of people think, transferring a domain name from one registrar to another will not result in any service interruption and will maintain all your DNS settings. What you need to remember however, is that you will need an authorization code (AKA EPP code, or auth code) in order to transfer your domain (with the exception of .BE and .EU domains, as you will be contacted by the registry), and this code must be provided to you by the registrar that you are transferring away from.

And while we've got your attention, we thought we'd remind you about the guessing-game contest we're having about "when will the one-millionth domain name be registered at Gandi?". This promotion will run up to the time of this actual domain registration (which of course we don't even know). In case you're interested, you can enter by trying to guess the exact date and time that the 1 millionth domain will be registered. The person that is the closest to this date will win a dream vacation of your choice!

Do you want to join the contest? It's free, and it is here!

As always, if you want to transfer your domains to Gandi, its over here!

In response to a generous promotion at Verisign (the registry that is in charge of .COM and .NET domains), we are having a sale on .com and .net creations until October 10th that gives you a 50% price reduction on the second year for new purchases, e.g. the first year is €12/$15/£8.30, but the second year is €6/$7.50/£4.15 excl. VAT. This offer is valid for all customers that buy on our A rates (45 domains or less).

For higher volume grids (B-D rates), we will apply this 50% discount in the first year (so €6/$7.50/£4.30 excl. VAT per year), then normal B-D price for each extra year. And for E rates this is €4/$5.50/£3.60 in the first year, then normal E rates afterwards.

.COM and .NET domains are open to all for registration.
Promotion on .COM and .ORG renewals before ICANN authorised price rises
The increase in domain costs has unfortunately arrived...
The new ICANN contract that was "negotiated" in early 2006 authorizes up to 4 annual price increases of up to 10% over a 6-year period. After an average increase of 6% last year, the registries are now asking for an average increase of 8.5% beginning in October 2008.

As we mentioned last year (see here), our rates will not be able to remain unaffected by this. Our increase will begin on October 1st for .com domains, and November 9th for .org domains. They will only affect customers with C,D, and E rates, for which the increase will be €0.20/£0.15/$0.30 per domain and per year for purchases and renewals respectively.

We we aware of the additional cost that this means for you, but with the tension caused by the low value of the US dollar and the near certainty of yet another price increase next year force us to act this year in order to maintain an irreproachable level of service.

Promotion on .COM and .ORG renewals
In order to help you benefit from current rates, we are having a promotion before the price hike, of 10% off .com and .org renewals for renewal periods from 3 to 10 years.
.COM and .ORG renewals will therefore be:

€10.80 / $13.50 / £7.47 excl. VAT for A rates,

€9.90 / $12.60 / £6.84 excl. VAT for B rates,

€8.10 / $10.80 /£5.58 excl. VAT for C rates,

€6.75 / $9.00 / £4.68 excl. VAT for D rates,

€5.40 / $7.20 / £3.74excl. VAT for E rates.

Until now we have provided you with an anti-spam email address that helps protect you from the result of the publication of your real email address in the public Whois database. We have also vowed to never resell any of your information to a third party.
Today, Gandi now gives individuals the possibility of private domain registration for domains in COM, NET, ORG, INFO, BIZ, NAME, TV, CC, and MOBI, that completely hides your street address, email, telephone and fax number.
To see what this looks like in detail, I invite you to view its presentation page at http://www.gandi.net/domain/whois

This service is free of charge and is made via your account management page. It requires just the acceptance of the Annex to the General Terms and Conditions of Domain Name Registration which you can read at https://www.gandi.net/contracts/en/whois/pdf/

Activation of this service in no way exonerates you from providing complete, exact and reliable contact information. Indeed, in the event of a verification either by Gandi or the registry, the non-disclosure of your current, full and accurate contact information can lead to the suspension or deletion of domain names managed under that handle. Also, this service is not one of providing an alternative contact address, of anonymity, or a forwarding of messages. There will therefore not be any forwarding of letters, messages or documents from people that try to reach you at our address.

This is therefore not a service just for convenience, but one that we provide for you as a way to help protect your privacy. The fact that it is free should also assure you that this offering is not just to make more money: is it a present from Gandi?

Finally, I would like to remind you that for the majority of European countries, individuals are already fully protected, as is true with .FR, or partially protected as with .EU (only the e-mail address is displayed).

If you would like to comment on this, please feel free to join us at the Gandi Bar.
